BMW, Toyota aim to make hydrogen-powered EVs mainstream with partnership

BMW and Toyota have announced a partnership to develop hydrogen-fueled electric cars, with plans to release hydrogen-powered versions of one of BMW's existing models in 2028. Hydrogen cars, also known as fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, offering a viable alternative to traditional battery-powered electric vehicles. BMW sees hydrogen cars as complementary to battery-powered cars and aims to target consumers who want cleaner vehicles but lack access to EV chargers or require greater range and towing capability. The companies will also work on expanding hydrogen infrastructure and may consider selling their technology to third parties.
