Big Tech wants AI to be regulated. Why do they oppose a California AI bill?

California legislators are considering a bill, SB 1047, that aims to regulate the development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in the state. If passed, the bill would require safety testing for advanced AI models, the inclusion of kill switches, third-party audits, and protections for AI whistleblowers. While proponents argue that such regulations are necessary to protect the public, opponents including tech giants like Google and Meta, as well as some lawmakers, believe that the bill could stifle innovation, drive developers away from the state, and pose challenges for open-source AI models. The bill has already passed the state Senate and is awaiting a vote by the full Assembly.
