Big tech told to identify AI deepfakes ahead of EU vote

The European Union has called on social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok to combat deepfakes and other AI-generated content by implementing clear labels ahead of the upcoming European elections in June. These recommendations are part of guidelines published under the EU's content law aimed at addressing risks to elections, including disinformation. The EU has been cracking down on big tech through measures like the Digital Services Act (DSA), classifying 22 digital platforms as "very large," and is particularly concerned about the impact of Russian manipulation and disinformation on the upcoming elections. While the guidelines are not legally binding, platforms must explain alternative effective measures if they do not adhere to them, and non-compliance could result in fines.
