Chinese technology company Baidu has denied allegations that its AI chatbot Ernie is connected to Chinese military research. The denial came in response to a report from a Hong Kong newspaper that claimed an academic paper affiliated with the People's Liberation Army cyberwarfare division stated that the division tested its AI system on Baidu's Ernie. Baidu refuted the allegations and clarified that Ernie is publicly available with no collaboration with the authors of the paper. The stock price of Baidu faced a significant decline after the report was published.

Samsung has launched its Galaxy S24 lineup in China and is partnering with Chinese tech giant Baidu for its Galaxy AI features. The Chinese version of the smartphone will use Baidu's Ernie chatbot, as Google is not mentioned in this launch. The AI features include translation, summarization, and text formatting, along with real-time call translation and a version of Google's Circle to Search feature. This substitution is likely due to Google's limited presence in China. Baidu had to gain approval from the Chinese government before launching Ernie.

Chinese tech giants are rapidly developing their own AI models and trying to catch up with their US counterparts like OpenAI. The Chinese government has approved over 40 AI models in the last six months, including 14 Large Language Models (LLMs) in just the past week. Baidu, often referred to as "China's Google," is leading the charge with its AI chatbot Ernie Bot, which has over 100 million users and is considered a competitor to OpenAI's GPT-4 model. However, Chinese companies face both technological and political challenges, as AI models must adhere to strict government regulations and avoid sensitive topics. Additionally, geopolitical tensions, such as restrictions on semiconductor sales, may hinder China's progress in becoming an AI superpower.

China's Baidu has launched its AI app ERNIE Bot to the public, aiming to capitalize on the global AI trend. This follows China's introduction of new regulations for AI developers, enabling them to compete while controlling online information. ERNIE Bot, the first domestic AI app available in China, is part of Baidu's suite of generative AI apps. The app's widespread availability will aid its improvement with human feedback. These apps are designed to understand, generate, reason, and remember complex questions in human-like language. Chinese apps must follow socialist values and not threaten security or promote harmful content.
