As Amazon expands use of warehouse robots, what will it mean for workers?

Amazon is implementing various robots in its warehouses to enhance efficiency and decrease employee injuries. These robots include Robin and Cardinal, two robotic arms capable of lifting packages up to 50 pounds, Sparrow which picks up items from bins, Proteus, an autonomous mobile robot for cart transportation, Digit, a bipedal humanoid robot for moving empty totes, and Sequoia, a containerized storage system that presents totes to employees to avoid stretching or squatting. While some robots are currently being tested or in the early stages of implementation, Amazon is already seeing benefits such as faster order fulfillment and reduced repetitive tasks. However, the introduction of automation poses challenges in retraining workers for new roles if their jobs are made obsolete by robots.
