Tiny Corp., a startup specializing in the neural network framework tinygrad, has introduced a new AI system called tinybox. This system employs six AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards and is designed to provide PetaFLOPS-class performance for artificial intelligence tasks. Priced at $15,000, the compact tinybox features high performance, with up to 738 FP16 TFLOPS and 96GB of GDDR6 memory delivering 21TB/s of aggregated memory bandwidth. The company has received 583 preorders and plans to begin shipping in April. The tinybox aims to offer an affordable alternative to Nvidia's H100 at a lower cost.

'Instincts are massively cheaper than Nvidia's H100': AMD is selling flagship AI GPUs at a huge discount to Microsoft — but I'm not sure that will be enough to bother Nvidia

AMD is offering its flagship AI GPUs, the Instincts, at a significant discount to Microsoft, providing a competitive alternative to Nvidia's pricier H100. The pricing difference between Nvidia's H100 and AMD's MI300X is substantial, with AMD's GPUs costing up to four times less. However, Nvidia's dominant position in the AI GPU market is unlikely to be substantially impacted due to its established software stack and high demand. AMD is predicted to generate $3.5 billion in AI-related revenue this year, but some analysts believe that figure could be underestimated.

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is planning to deploy its own custom-designed AI chips, called Artemis, in its data centers this year. This move aims to reduce Meta's reliance on Nvidia's H100 chips and control the rising costs of running AI workloads. The successful deployment of its own chip could save Meta hundreds of millions of dollars in energy costs and billions in chip purchasing costs. However, Meta will continue to use Nvidia's GPUs in its data centers, with plans to have 350,000 H100 processors in service by the end of the year.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has emerged as a strong competitor to Nvidia in the artificial intelligence (AI) chip market. AMD's new MI300 chip outperforms Nvidia's H100 chip in terms of specifications, and the company expects to sell $3.5 billion worth of MI300s in 2023. AMD's focus on CPUs for data-center servers and GPUs for gaming consoles has paid off, with its market value growing 100-fold to $270 billion. However, AMD still faces tough competition from Nvidia's dominance in AI accelerator chips, but its strong hardware and partnerships position it as a viable alternative.

Concerns have emerged over IndiaAI Mission’s use of end-of-life (EOL) GPUs, which some companies claim are unsuitable for mission-critical workloads due to potential lack of support. Although Nvidia's A100 GPUs are still powerful, they are no longer sold to OEMs. Critics worry about performance issues, while others argue they offer value given current GPU shortages. The debate centers around balancing cost-effectiveness with the risk of using outdated technology in evolving AI landscapes.
