AMD buys AI equipment maker for nearly $5 billion, escalating battle with Nvidia

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is set to acquire ZT Systems, a data-center equipment designer, for nearly $5 billion. The move is aimed at strengthening AMD's presence in the market for cloud computing and artificial intelligence, and competing against Nvidia. ZT Systems designs and manufactures servers, server racks, and other infrastructure for data centers. The deal will allow AMD to offer a broader range of chips, software, and system designs to big data-center customers like Microsoft and Meta Platforms. Following the acquisition, AMD plans to sell ZT's manufacturing business while keeping its system-design business. The deal is expected to close in the first half of next year, pending regulatory approvals.
