Bharti Airtel has stated that it will not merge its data centre business, Nxtra, with Indus Towers. The telecom operator prefers to keep the assets unbundled for flexibility. Bharti Airtel is the largest shareholder in Indus Towers and had previously expressed plans to dilute its holdings in Nxtra. However, Airtel's top executives have indicated that merging the assets is not currently a direction they are pursuing. Data centres are seen as a long-term investment for Airtel, with the company planning to spend around INR 5,000 crore on them in the coming years.

India's data centre industry is expanding beyond traditional metropolitan hubs like Mumbai and Chennai and moving towards emerging hotspots in cities such as Kochi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Patna, and Visakhapatnam. This shift is driven by the need to serve a growing and distributed user base across the country. Companies like Airtel's Nxtra, NTT, and CtrlS see opportunities in these locations due to improved infrastructure, strategic positioning, and cost advantages. The launch of 5G and the increasing demand for low-latency computing are expected to further boost growth in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Bharti Airtel's CEO, Gopal Vittal, has emphasized the need for a significant increase in tariffs to repair the telecom industry. He stated that the current level of tariffs in India is "absurdly low" and multiple rounds of tariff hikes are required. Vittal believes that average revenue per user (ARPU) needs to reach โน300, although even at this level, it would still be one of the lowest globally. He added that the pricing and tariffs in India are broken, hindering the monetization of 5G services. Vittal also welcomed Vodafone Idea's recent fundraising efforts and emphasized the need for three strong operators in the market.

Bharti Airtel's managing director, Gopal Vittal, stated that the telecom company will focus on investing in 5G technology, even though there is limited monetization potential. Capacity investments in 4G have been halted. Vittal emphasized that tariff repair is necessary for improved return ratios, regardless of the technology driving the improvements. He also highlighted that the pricing architecture in India is flawed, preventing effective monetization. Free 5G data and unlimited plans are creating challenges in this regard. Bharti Airtel reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 2,072 crore in Q4FY24, down 31.1% compared to the previous year.
