'AI godfather', others urge more deepfake regulation in open letter

Artificial intelligence (AI) experts, including Yoshua Bengio, are calling for better regulation regarding the creation of deepfakes due to potential risks. Deepfakes, which involve manipulated and fabricated content created using AI algorithms, are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from real content. The open letter, titled "Disrupting the Deepfake Supply Chain," suggests criminalizing deepfake child pornography, penalizing individuals creating or facilitating harmful deepfakes, and requiring AI companies to prevent the creation of harmful deepfakes. Over 400 individuals, including researchers from Google DeepMind and OpenAI, have signed the letter. Regulating AI to ensure it does not harm society has been a growing concern.
