AALTO seeks to democratize high-speed internet access through solar-powered drones

Alphabet's ambitious moonshot project, Loon, which aimed to deliver high-speed internet to underserved areas using weather balloons, shut down in 2021. Loon's technical progress was commendable, but it couldn't achieve the necessary commercial viability. However, its technology lives on in Airbus' AALTO project, which employs solar-powered drones for internet connectivity. Unlike Loon, AALTO uses fixed-winged drones to ensure more stable coverage. Each drone can cover a large area, operates on solar power for months, and can be deployed temporarily after natural disasters. AALTO aims to partner with carriers and government agencies for its services.

A salesman in Moscow has been selling Starlink internet terminals to Russian forces fighting in Ukraine, despite Russia officially banning the use of the SpaceX-developed service. This has given Russian forces an advantage by providing access to the internet and enabling the control of drones and other advanced technologies. The terminals are obtained through a shadowy supply chain, involving middlemen who purchase the hardware on platforms such as eBay and ship them to Russia. Similar activities have been observed in countries like Sudan, where Starlink is also banned. SpaceX has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
