The post glosses over the mind-boggling engineering challenges that remain unsolved even after billions in investment from governments and companies like Commonwealth Fusion and TAE. The fundamental challenge isn't generating fusion reactions - we've been doing that since the 1950s. It's creating a sustained reaction that produces more energy than it consumes (net energy gain) AND can be economically viable. Even the record-breaking JET experiment mentioned here consumed far more energy than it produced. The NIF breakthrough in 2022 achieved energy gain, but using equipment the size of three football fields that can't fire more than a few times per day.
