Relook parts of draft cybercrime treaty: Rights groups to UN panel

Over 40 civil societies and digital rights organizations, including Access Now, Human Rights Watch, and Privacy International, have written a joint letter to the UN committee on cybercrime, urging the reconsideration of certain provisions in the draft treaty. The concerns raised include the broad scope of the treaty, the criminalization provisions, and the lack of protection for cybersecurity researchers acting in the public interest. The draft treaty proposes the preservation of electronic data for up to 90 days and granting authorities the power to seize electronic data. These organizations highlight the potential for abuse and human rights violations with such provisions. The UN committee was established to develop an international convention to counter cybercrime.
