Most people think product ideas come from a sudden moment of inspiration. They don’t. I’ve spent time building stuff , and every single time, the idea wasn’t some lightbulb moment . It came from something observable. Something that already existed. You just had to see it. The problem isn’t a lack of ideas , it’s a naive understanding of what “original” even means. Nothing is truly original. Austin Kleon said it best in Steal Like an Artist: creative work builds on what came before. If Michelangelo could remix David , literally a sculpture of an earlier sculpture , we can remix products too. Most ideas are already there. You just missed them. The internet is full of apps and products that used to matter. Things that had users, solved problems, maybe even had passionate communities , and then died. I scroll through Reddit, Inc., old GitHub projects, discontinued tools, and I see opportunities. I see things that once ran, that just need a new spark. People look at failed apps and say , “That idea failed.” I see, “That idea is dormant.” The difference is perspective , and it’s huge. Ideas that once worked, that got abandoned, that fell behind design trends , those are low hanging fruit. Revive them with modern design and people treat it like you invented something new. People don’t switch products because of one extra feature , they switch because it feels better. Every designer eventually learns this the hard way. Originality is about taste, timing, and execution. People remember great execution far more than who did something first.
