#VoicesForTheVoiceless (Day 3 of 15) Honouring: Dr. Vibhu Prakash, Principal Scientist of the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), leader of India’s vulture conservation programme. In the 1990s, India’s skies were silently emptying. The vulture population across the subcontinent collapsed by an apocalyptic 99.9%. This was not a slow decline. It was a freefall. Vultures aren't always seen as majestic. But they are nature's most essential sanitation department. Without them, carcasses rot, water sources get contaminated, and the populations of feral dogs and rats explode, bringing with them a terrifying increase in diseases like rabies. The world was baffled. The cause? A mystery. Enter Dr. Vibhu Prakash, a principal scientist at the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). He and his team became the lead detectives in this ecological thriller. Their meticulous research uncovered the culprit, a true "smoking gun"... It was Diclofenac, a common anti-inflammatory drug given to cattle. The drug was harmless to livestock but lethally toxic to the vultures who fed on their remains. Our human actions were unintentionally poisoning an entire branch of the tree of life. Why their work is critical: - Identifying the Threat: Dr. Prakash’s research provided the undeniable scientific proof needed to lobby the government. - Saving a Species: This led to a nationwide ban on veterinary Diclofenac in 2006, a monumental conservation victory. - Building an Ark: He helped establish the "Jatayu" Vulture Conservation Breeding Centres, a network of sanctuaries to safely rebuild the population. - The Climate Connection: This is a story about ecosystem resilience. A healthy, functioning ecosystem is our best defense against climate shocks. When we, with our chemicals and pollution, wipe out a keystone species like the vulture, we shatter that resilience. We break a critical link in the natural circular economy. Dr. Vibhu Prakash and the BNHS gave a voice to a species that was being silently poisoned into oblivion. They didn't just save the vulture; they saved the integrity of our entire ecosystem.
