70% of McDonald's US revenue comes from 'drive-thrus'. In India, we have <150 drive-thru locations across all QSR chains combined. But I think India might be an Ideal market for drive-thrus (parking constraints + busy roads) ⤵️ Drive-thru was actually invented by accident. McDonald's first drive-thru opened in 1975 in Arizona because military personnel at Fort Huachuca couldn't leave vehicles while wearing uniforms off-base. Indirectly created a $140 B market. Today: 47% of Americans avoid restaurants without drive-thru entirely. Drive-thru accounts for 70-75% of all QSR sales in the US. Most people think India is a 'sit and chill' market. But that's not entirely the case. We only measure people who successfully parked and entered. Not the ones who drove past seeing 'Parking Full' boards. - 450M+ urban Indians - Car sales growing 8% yearly - Average parking search time in metros: 15-20 mins (at a minimum) - 60% say parking availability affects restaurant choice If parking + walking = 30 mins, at India's median urban salary, that's ₹150 of time lost for a ₹200 burger. Found a few more insights on this ⤵️ a). McDonald's: 25,000 drive-thru locations worldwide b). Taco Bell: Fastest at 4 min 16 seconds per order c). Chick-fil-A: $9.275 M per drive-thru location despite 8-min wait times China: 0 to 1,000+ drive-thrus in 10 years after adapting for e-bikes and local menus South Korea: Drive-thrus designed specifically for delivery pickups - drivers never leave vehicles India's Starbucks: 6 highway locations reportedly doing 2x revenue of mall outlets with half the staff ⏭️My prediction→ India can reinvent 'drive-thrus'. Two-wheeler lanes. QR code ordering while driving. FASTag integration for payment. Dedicated delivery pickup windows. The QSR market will hit ₹7 lakh Cr by 2032. Whoever cracks drive-thru for Indian conditions could have a massive upside.

I love how Blume breaks down India's market into three layers - (a). India 1 - Roughly 10% of the population, APC income → $15K - High-spenders who drive trends in premium products and services: think Blue Tokai Coffee, Licious, Country Delight. -
