Why did Google stop using dessert names for Android? If you’ve been using Android for a while, you probably remember the fun dessert names—Cupcake, Donut, KitKat, Oreo... But starting with Android 10, Google dropped the sweet tradition. Here’s why: 👉 It wasn’t global-friendly Not everyone around the world is familiar with desserts like Nougat or Marshmallow. Some names were hard to pronounce or recognize in different languages, which made things confusing for users. 👉 Android was growing up By the time Android 10 came around, the OS had matured a lot. Google wanted a simpler, more professional naming system. Numbers felt cleaner and more universal—just like iOS (13, 14, 15...) or Windows (10, 11...). 👉 The alphabetical names confused people Sure, the dessert names followed the alphabet, but not everyone kept track. Was Nougat before Oreo? Is Pie newer than Lollipop? It wasn’t always clear which version was the latest. So now it’s just Android 10, 11, 12, and so on. 🍰 But here’s a fun fact: Google still uses dessert names internally. You just don’t see them anymore. Android 10 = Quince Tart Android 11 = Red Velvet Cake Android 12 = Snow Cone Android 13 = Tiramisu Android 14 = Upside Down Cake Even if the names are gone from the spotlight, the tradition lives on behind the scenes.
