UX without users is ... • 23d

What is the AI revolution trying to achieve, and what should the experience be? As a startup or side project, we are primarily interested in features and how the user interface should appear, but the main focus is still on what the user should do and what behavior the experience should aim to improve. The Example of Windsurf AI we can take and see what happened: Windsurf AI's wild 4-year journey (Codeium - $2.85B val - Google poaching - Cognition acquisition) feels eerily familiar. But is this 2025 or 1999? Let’s break it down: Similarities: Valuation Frenzy: $244M funding - $2.85B valuation in <3 years (dot-com speed) Talent Wars: Google paid $2.4B JUST to hire Windsurf’s CEO+team (like Cisco’s 1999 hiring sprees) Hype Cycle: “AI will replace devs!” echoes 2000’s “The internet changes everything!” (Spoiler: Both did… but slower than predicted) Key Differences: Real ROI: 40-200% productivity gains for devs (unlike Pets.com’s $0 ROI) Enterprise Adoption: 1,000+ paying clients (vs. dot-com’s “get big fast” with no revenue) Strategic Buyers: Cognition acquired for tech (not just hype) The Big Lesson: AI is having its “rational exuberance” moment: ✅ Real value being created (Might be that agent which helps for a solution or a direct us towards solution) ⚠️ But unsustainable models (Windsurf’s broken free-tier) still crash hard ⚠️ Feature frenzy and ignoring design workflows as per the product cycle Prediction of ABstraUXer: A correction is coming (like 2001), but the winners: those with actual user problem solving business models will dominate for decades.
