OpenAIâs Journey Till Now 2015: OpenAI is founded as a non-profit with $1B committed from supporters, but received just around $130M in total donations, which included less than $45M from Elon Musk and about $90M from other donors 2016-2017: OpenAI experiments with various AI products in gaming, robotics, and AI toolkits. 2017: The "Attention is All You Need" paper is released, which influenced the development of ChatGPT by introducing the Transformer architecture. 2018-2019: GPT-1 and GPT-2 models are announced. 2019: OpenAI becomes a "capped-profit company" and raises $1B from Microsoft. 2020: GPT-3 model is released. 2021: ⢠Anthropic is founded by ex-OpenAI VPs. ⢠DALL-E and Codex are released. ⢠Microsoft invests further into OpenAI, and GitHub Copilot is released. 2022: ChatGPT launched in November, gains 100M users by January. 2023: ⢠Microsoft invests $10B in OpenAI. ⢠OpenAIâs valuation rises to $29B. ⢠GPT-4 is released shortly after. 2024: ⢠ChatGPT reaches 200M users in August and 300M users in December. ⢠OpenAI o1 is released, OpenAI reportedly valued at $86B. ⢠OpenAI raises $6.6B at a $157B valuation, becoming the 3rd highest-valued private company in the world. 2025: ⢠OpenAI finalizes $40B funding round at a $300B post-money valuation, nearly doubling from its previous valuation. ⢠But there's a CONDITION- if OpenAI doesnât restructure into an independent for-profit company by the end of 2025, its mega-financing round could be slashed by $20 billion.
