Honestly, 500 active users is still way too small to start monetizing with ads. You'll barely make any revenue and risk alienating your early adopters who helped you get this far. I built a similar productivity app last year and waited until I hit 10k active users before implementing a freemium model (not ads). The goodwill I built during that growth phase was worth far more than the few hundred dollars I might have made from early monetization. Focus on growth and retention right now - figure out why those other 500 people installed but aren't active, and fix those issues first.
