Karishma Mehta founded Humans of Bombay in January 2014 as a simple Facebook page aimed at telling stories to connect strangers with the sentiment, "You're not alone." At 21 years old, armed with a camera and a passion for storytelling, she began approaching strangers in Mumbai to share their narratives. The inaugural story featured a recently widowed woman in her mid-50s, marking the start of a platform that would grow into a storytelling powerhouse. Karishma Mehta graduated with a double major in Business and Economics from the University of Nottingham. Post-graduation, she took a six-month sabbatical, during which she conceptualized and launched Humans of Bombay. As the Founder and CEO, Karishma has evolved from managing a simple Facebook page to leading a team dedicated to storytelling across multiple platforms. Humans of Bombay has published over 6,000 stories, highlighting personal experiences ranging from love and friendship to social challenges. The platform has built a community of over 3.2 million people, emphasizing the power of storytelling to foster connection and empathy. Beyond storytelling, Humans of Bombay has raised over ₹15 crores through crowdfunding, supporting surgeries, education, and rehabilitation for underprivileged individuals. The platform has expanded to include a YouTube channel with over 400,000 subscribers, featuring a talk show titled "How The Hell Did I Do It," hosting personalities like Aamir Khan and Harsha Bhogle. Incorporated as Humans Of Bombay Stories Private Limited on November 20, 2015, the company has shown significant financial growth, with a 53.55% increase in revenue and a 21.04% rise in profit for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023. The company's net worth surged by 54.31% during the same period, reflecting its expanding influence and successful business model. With a dedicated team, Humans of Bombay continues to celebrate the human spirit through real-life narratives and portraits that inspire and uplift individuals. Karishma Mehta's vision and dedication have transformed a simple idea into a movement that underscores the significance of every individual's story.
