Definitely people's can do it but if someone will identify you that you created favouritism and did miscellaneous practices in your company work ethics policies then maybe they will file Legal case against you because you signed contract with them also they have full authority to ask componsation because they missed opportunity to hire someone who adds more value or growth in company so at the end of the day they can recover losses from you .
