As far as my experience says ! It doesn't matter if you pay them or not in the start, but help them grow , learn new stuffs & make the part of startup family . They'll work x2 happily, if they have the security that , as a entrepreneur you respect there time, suggestions & thought process ..

Completely agree! They only work happily if they are able to learn. So, it's not just about paying them; even if you're not paying them, providing a good environment for learning will make them work happily for you. That's what I've been doing for a year now.
