Vote on EU cybersecurity label delayed to May

National cybersecurity experts have delayed voting on a proposed EU cybersecurity label, which would allow tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft to bid for sensitive EU cloud computing contracts. The European Union aims to implement a cybersecurity certification scheme (EUCS) that validates the cybersecurity of cloud services, assisting governments and businesses in choosing secure and trustworthy cloud vendors. However, disagreements over strict requirements for Big Tech to qualify for the highest level of the EU cybersecurity label have impeded progress. The draft scheme proposed by EU cybersecurity agency ENISA in 2020 was not voted on during the recent expert meeting. Further steps involve opinions from EU countries and a final decision by the European Commission.

The European Union has scrapped a requirement for vendors bidding for EU cloud computing contracts to be independent from non-EU laws. This change could make it easier for tech giants such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft to bid for these contracts. The EU has been struggling to agree on a cybersecurity certification scheme (EUCS) to ensure the cybersecurity of cloud services. The move comes as Big Tech seeks growth opportunities in the government cloud market, while the EU has concerns about illegal state surveillance and the dominance of US cloud providers. The latest draft of the rules removes requirements for joint ventures and data storage in the EU, instead focusing on information about data location and applicable laws. EU countries are currently reviewing the revised draft.

Spain's data protection watchdog, AEPD, has ordered the suspension of two planned Meta products on Instagram and Facebook, citing potential violations of Spanish data protection laws. The apps, Election Day Information (EDI) and Voter Information Unit (VIU), were intended to send notifications to all eligible users in the European Union, reminding them to vote. However, AEPD stated that Meta's data processing practices were in breach of data protection principles and unnecessarily targeted certain users, such as EU citizens living abroad and non-EU citizens in Europe. Meta has not yet responded to the order.

EU antitrust regulators have delayed their investigation into Amazon's acquisition of robot vacuum cleaner maker iRobot due to a lack of requested information from the companies. The European Commission stopped the clock on September 8, with effect from August 29, and will restart it once the missing information is provided. The EU watchdog has expressed concerns that the deal could reduce competition in the robot vacuum cleaner market and strengthen Amazon's dominant position as an online marketplace provider. The previous deadline for the Commission's decision on the deal was December 13.

Possible EU sanctions may include fines up to six percent of Twitter's annual worldwide turnover. While a Brazil-like shutdown in the EU is unlikely, dialogue between Twitter and the EU is ongoing.
