UK blames China for massive breach of voter data

The U.K. government has accused China of being responsible for a cyberattack in 2021 that compromised the personal information of millions of U.K. voters. The deputy prime minister, Oliver Dowden, stated that the U.K. government will take strong action against China if its interests are threatened. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said it is highly likely that Chinese hackers accessed and stole emails and data from the electoral register during the breach. The NCSC warned that China could use the stolen data for espionage and repression. In addition, it was revealed that a China-backed hacking group attempted to target U.K. lawmakers' email accounts in 2021, but these attacks were mitigated by parliamentary authorities.
