India has made significant advancements in its telecommunications network over the past few decades. The country now boasts the second-largest telecom network, with 119 crore telecom users as of March 2024. The widespread adoption of 4G services and the entrance of Reliance Jio with its affordable data and free voice calls revolutionized the industry. India is now witnessing a rapid rollout of 5G, with Airtel and Reliance Jio leading the effort. To bridge the gap in areas without 4G coverage, the government is exploring satellite communication (satcom) technology. India also has ambitious plans to lead in 6G development, with the establishment of a dedicated task force, a 6G test bed at IIT-Madras, and the launch of the Bharat 6G Mission roadmap.
