Orbital Materials, founded by former DeepMind researcher Jonathan Godwin, is developing an AI-powered platform to discover new physical materials. Inspired by AI's potential in material science, the startup aims to revolutionize the process of material discovery, which traditionally involves time-consuming trial and error experiments. While AI cannot replace real-world experimentation, it can save time and money by mapping out properties and processes that may yield specific materials. Orbital Materials has developed a proprietary AI model called Linus, which generates 3D molecular structures based on natural language instructions from scientists. The startup recently raised $16 million in a Series A funding round to expand its team and advance its technology.
