Stability AI has introduced Stable Diffusion XL Turbo, an AI image-synthesis model that can generate imagery in real-time based on a written prompt. The model uses a technique called Adversarial Diffusion Distillation (ADD) to produce image outputs in a single step, significantly reducing the number of required steps compared to its predecessor. While the images produced by SDXL Turbo aren't as detailed as those generated by higher step counts, the speed savings are impressive. Stability AI claims that the model can generate a 1024x1024 image in about 4 seconds, compared to 26.4 seconds for a 20-step image with similar detail.

Stability AI has launched Stable Diffusion XL Turbo, an AI image-synthesis model that can generate images in real-time based on a written prompt or transform images quickly from a source like a webcam. The model uses a technique called Adversarial Diffusion Distillation (ADD) to produce image outputs in a single step, reducing the time required compared to its predecessor. While the images generated by SDXL Turbo are not as detailed as those produced at higher step counts, the speed at which it operates makes it a promising tool for tasks like generative AI video filters.

Stability AI has introduced Stable Video Diffusion, a free AI research tool that can transform still images into short videos. The tool utilizes image-to-video techniques and operates locally on a machine with an Nvidia GPU. With two models available, users can generate video synthesis ranging from 14 to 25 frames. The resulting video clips are typically 2-4 seconds in length and have a resolution of 576x1024 pixels. Stability AI stresses that the tool is still in the early stages and is intended for research purposes only. The source and weights of the models used in Stable Video Diffusion are available on GitHub.

Stability AI has introduced Stable Diffusion 3, an open-weights image-synthesis model. The new model boasts improved quality and accuracy in text generation, generating detailed, multi-subject images. Stable Diffusion 3 comes in a range of sizes, from 800 million to 8 billion parameters, allowing for different versions to run on various devices. Stability has gained attention for providing an open alternative to proprietary models like OpenAI's DALL-E 3. The Stable Diffusion models utilize diffusion transformer architecture and employ flow matching to smoothly transition from random noise to structured images. Testing is currently underway, with plans for a free open release in the future.

Google and Tel Aviv University researchers have developed GameNGen, an AI model that can simulate the 1993 game Doom in real-time using AI image generation techniques. The model, which functions as a limited game engine, has the potential to enable real-time video game synthesis by using AI to generate graphics on the spot. GameNGen can generate new frames of Doom gameplay at over 20 frames per second, and in tests, humans struggled to distinguish between the generated frames and actual gameplay footage. The model uses a modified version of Stable Diffusion 1.4 for image synthesis.

A Reddit user named Ugleh has garnered attention on social media for posting AI-generated images of a spiral-shaped medieval village. The images, created using Stable Diffusion and ControlNet, have received praise for their remarkable geometric qualities. Reactions range from wonder and amazement to recognition of a new development in the world of AI art. Notably, Y-Combinator co-founder Paul Graham stated that this was the point where AI-generated art passed the Turing Test for him metaphorically. However, some users criticized the artwork, pointing out flaws that are typical of AI art. The techniques used, such as Stable Diffusion and ControlNet, involve neural networks and additional guidance to replicate shapes and poses from source images. Despite offers to turn the artwork into NFTs, Ugleh has chosen to remain low-profile. Current US copyright policy suggests that the images may be in the public domain, raising questions about the legal recognition and protection of AI-generated artworks.

Stability AI, a London-based startup, has launched "Stable Audio," an AI-powered music generator designed to create high-quality, commercial-ready music. It builds on a 1.2-billion-parameter model developed by Stability's in-house audio team, offering greater control over music content and length compared to previous generative tools. Using latent diffusion, it can generate coherent and melodic music tracks of up to 90 seconds, making it suitable for various genres like EDM and ambient music. However, concerns about copyright and artist compensation in using AI-generated music remain. Artists can monetize works created with Stable Audio, but copyright protection is not included.

Stability AI has introduced Stable Cascade, a new model for image generation that is faster and more powerful than its predecessor, Stable Diffusion. Stable Cascade offers various features such as generating photos, increasing image resolution, inpainting, outpainting, and canny edge creation. Although the model is available for researchers on GitHub, it is not yet permitted for commercial use. Stable Cascade breaks down requests into smaller parts, improving memory efficiency and processing speed. The model takes around 10 seconds to generate an image, compared to the 22 seconds required by the current SDXL model.

AI benchmarking group MLCommons has released new tests and results that assess the speed of top-of-the-line hardware in running AI applications. The benchmarks focus on the generation of responses from powerful AI models, showcasing how quickly applications like ChatGPT can deliver responses. MLCommons added a question-and-answer benchmark called Llama 2, developed by Meta Platforms, and a text-to-image generator benchmark based on Stability AI's Stable Diffusion XL model. Servers powered by Nvidia's H100 chips were the winners in terms of raw performance, with designs from other companies also showing promising results. Energy efficiency remains a significant challenge in AI deployment. MLCommons has a separate benchmark category for measuring power consumption.
