Fintech companies PhonePe and Paytm are planning to run audio advertisements on the sound boxes they have deployed across retail outlets. The experiment involves partnering with FMCG companies such as Mondelez and Tata Consumer Products. The ads will be played on the sound boxes after every few transactions, offering a potential revenue stream for the fintech firms. There are currently 10-12 million sound boxes deployed in India, which confirm transactions with audio messages. The details of the ad implementation are still being determined, including the possibility of discounted device rentals and revenue-sharing with merchants.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has extended the Payments Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF) scheme by two years until December 2025. The scheme aims to promote digital payment infrastructure deployment in tier III-VI centers and special focus areas. As part of the extension, sound box devices and Aadhaar-enabled biometric devices are now eligible for subsidy. So far, 8.27 lakh physical devices and 2.71 crore digital devices have been deployed under the PIDF scheme. The corpus of the fund stands at INR 1,026.37 crore as of November 2023.
