Nvidia's dominant position in the AI chip market is being challenged by a consortium formed by tech giants including Qualcomm, Google, and Intel. The consortium, called the UXL Foundation, aims to develop an open-source software that can run on any chip and power various types of AI accelerators. Nvidia's success has largely been attributed to its CUDA software, which allows easy integration of GPUs with AI applications. However, with competitors seeking to create their own versions of CUDA, Nvidia's stronghold is now under threat. The consortium's technology is still in development, but it poses a significant challenge to Nvidia's market dominance.

Nvidia is establishing a new business unit dedicated to creating customized chips for cloud computing companies and AI processors. The move aims to tap into the growing market for custom AI chips while protecting Nvidia from competitors seeking alternative solutions. As the dominant player in the high-end AI chip market, Nvidia controls roughly 80% of this sector. However, to meet specific needs regarding cost and energy consumption, major customers like Meta and Microsoft have started developing their own internal chips. Nvidia now plans to assist these companies in designing custom AI chips, potentially competing against industry rivals Broadcom and Marvell. Other target markets for Nvidia's custom chips include telecom, automotive, and video games.

TikTok creators and small business owners face uncertainty as the U.S. Supreme Court deliberates on a potential ban due to national security concerns. The court's decision, pending arguments about First Amendment rights, could significantly impact livelihoods dependent on the platform. While some creators explore other social media options, the threat hasn't incited panic, partly due to past unfulfilled bans. TikTok's influential algorithm and expansive reach, particularly benefiting marginalized groups, remain vital aspects of its appeal.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is facing the challenge of competing with Nvidia in the AI chip market. Nvidia's AI business has rapidly grown, with a fourfold increase in revenue expected by 2025. AMD recently unveiled new AI chips and is targeting sales of $2 billion next year. The company's track record of exceeding sales forecasts gives some confidence in achieving this target. However, AMD's shares fell after the announcement, and the absence of major AI chip buyers like Amazon and Google raises questions about the company's ability to carve out a strong share in the face of well-established competition.

EU antitrust regulators are investigating Nvidia to determine if the company is using product bundling to gain an unfair advantage in the market. The regulators have sent out questionnaires to Nvidia's rivals and customers, asking about any commercial and technical tying of its graphics processing unit (GPU) products. Nvidia, which holds an 84% market share, has previously faced regulatory scrutiny in the EU, US, UK, China, and South Korea. The investigation could potentially lead to fines as high as 10% of Nvidia's global annual turnover. The French antitrust regulator is also reportedly investigating Nvidia separately.
