Meta removes 63,000 Instagram accounts in Nigeria over 'sextortion' scams

Meta Platforms has revealed the removal of approximately 63,000 accounts on Instagram involved in financial sexual extortion scams originating from Nigeria. These fraudsters, commonly known as "Yahoo boys," often deceive individuals by posing as individuals in need or promising high investment returns. In addition to the removed accounts, Meta also took down 7,200 Facebook accounts, pages, and groups offering scamming advice. The company reported attempts made against both adults and minors, the latter of which were shared with the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Meta aims to increase awareness and address concerns surrounding the harm caused by its services, as some governments have demanded action against child exploitation.
