How disinformation works—and how to counter it

Disinformation, or the intentional spread of false information, is becoming increasingly sophisticated and widespread due to the internet and advancements in technology. These campaigns use AI tools and social media networks to create and share convincing fake photos, videos, and audio. The goal is often to sow distrust in media, governments, and the concept of truth itself. While technology has made disinformation more challenging to combat, there are ways to address the issue, such as using AI for detection and better coordination among researchers, tech companies, and government agencies. However, the full extent of the problem requires access to data and may vary depending on the country's resources and political climate. Despite the dangers, there is little evidence to suggest that disinformation alone can significantly impact election outcomes.
