Google to blame for slower YouTube speeds in Russia, says senior lawmaker

Google's failure to upgrade its equipment in Russia and refusal to unblock Russian media channels has led to a sharp decline in YouTube speeds on desktop computers. The move is seen as a forced step by Russian authorities to punish YouTube for violating Russian law without consequences. Alexander Khinshtein, head of the information policy committee, stated that YouTube speeds in Russia have already dropped by 40% and could decrease up to 70% next week. Google's lack of investment in Russian infrastructure and the bankruptcy of its local subsidiary are cited as contributing factors. Russia has criticized Google for its actions and has imposed fines for not removing illegal or undesirable content. The Russian communications regulator also noted the declining quality of YouTube due to Google's failure to upgrade its servers.
