Congress wants tech companies to pay up for AI training data

During a Senate hearing on AI's impact on journalism, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle agreed that companies like OpenAI should pay media outlets for using their work in AI projects. This consensus reflects a growing sentiment in Washington, DC, that tech giants need to compensate media organizations for the training data that powers their generative AI systems. Media industry leaders at the hearing, including CEOs of the National Association of Broadcasters and the News Media Alliance, supported mandatory licensing and argued that AI companies using their work without permission is infringing on copyright. However, there is less agreement outside of the committee room on whether mandatory licensing is necessary or practical.
