Barracuda thought it drove 0-day hackers out of customers’ networks. It was wrong.

In a significant cybersecurity incident, state-sponsored hackers from China, tracked as UNC4841, exploited a critical vulnerability in Barracuda's Email Security Gateway to gain backdoor access to sensitive organizations' networks. After Barracuda deployed a patch in May, the hackers countered with a sophisticated move, deploying never-before-seen malware called DepthCharge to ensure that newly deployed appliances would reinfect themselves. The well-orchestrated counterattacks highlight the financial resources and sophistication of the hackers. Mandiant researchers noted that a limited number of previously impacted victims remain at risk due to this campaign, emphasizing the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures.
