Australian regulator demands social media firms disclose anti-terrorism efforts

The e-Safety Commission in Australia has demanded information from major social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Telegram, and Reddit regarding their efforts to combat terrorism content. The regulator is concerned that live-streaming features, algorithms, and recommendation systems are being used by extremists to recruit users. The commission has the power to impose fines on tech companies that fail to provide information on illegal content and their preventive measures. Telegram was highlighted as the most used platform by violent extremist groups. The commission has previously sought information on child abuse material and hate speech, but tackling terrorism content proves to be more complex due to its broad range and amplification methods.
