The Serial Port channel on YouTube has discovered what may be the last existing copy of Archie, a pioneering internet tool created in 1989. Archie allowed users to search for files on anonymous FTP servers, representing an early version of the all-encompassing internet we know today. The Serial Port team managed to find a working version of Archie's code, posted its documentation, and now operates an actual Archie server on an emulated Sun SPARCstation 5. The discovery is seen as a significant achievement in preserving the early history of the internet.

TikTok is introducing a new metric called "search value" to determine creator payouts on its platform. This is in line with the app's push to be used more like a search engine. Similar to search engine optimization (SEO), the search value metric measures how well a creator's content aligns with what users are searching for on TikTok. The platform encourages creators to use a tool called Creator Search Insights to research trending searches and create content that meets the audience's interests. This move further solidifies TikTok's position as a search engine and highlights its competition with platforms like Google.

Microsoft is reintroducing pop-up ads in Google Chrome to encourage users to switch to Bing. The ads, which first appeared last year, have resurfaced on Windows 10 and 11. Users reported seeing pop-ups promoting Bing AI and Microsoft's search engine, similar to malware. Microsoft confirmed the pop-ups' authenticity, claiming it is a one-time notification offering users the choice to set Bing as their default search engine. Many criticize Microsoft for aggressively promoting its services, including automatically importing browsing data from Chrome to Edge without consent.

Google claims switching from its search engine is easy. It's not.

In Google's defense against the Justice Department's antitrust trial, the company argues that changing one's default search engine is as easy as swapping out a box of cereal at a supermarket. However, experts and a practical test reveal that it's not as simple as Google claims. On an iPhone, it takes six taps to change the search engine. On a Mac, two clicks are required, but the process can be confusing. On Android, it's more complex and doesn't necessarily change the web browser's default search engine. The trial raises questions about how easy it is to switch away from Google as the default search engine on various devices.

US regulators are pushing for Google to be broken up to prevent the company from maintaining its monopoly in the search engine market. The proposal, filed by the US Department of Justice, suggests selling Google's Chrome web browser and imposing restrictions on Android to prevent it from favoring its own search engine. The recommended penalties also include banning Google from securing exclusive deals to be the default search engine on devices and requiring the company to license its search index data to rivals. The proposed breakup is seen as a severe punishment, but its implementation may face challenges.

The age of generative AI is posing a threat to web search algorithms, as demonstrated by an incident involving Microsoft's Bing search engine. It turns out that the information was fabricated by two chatbots, leading to the spread of false information. This incident highlights the challenges faced by search engines in detecting and filtering AI-generated content, which could potentially be used to manipulate search results. The unexpected consequences of AI-powered search tools raise concerns about the reliability of web search.

A Microsoft executive, Jonathan Tinter, testified that Apple and other smartphone makers declined revenue-sharing agreements with Microsoft's Bing search engine, which would have challenged Google's default search engine position on their devices. The U.S. Justice Department's antitrust case against Google alleges that the company pays billions to ensure Google search remains the default. Tinter stated that Bing struggled to become the default search engine on smartphones in the U.S., leading to poorer quality search experiences. Despite offering significant revenue sharing, Bing could not secure default status on Android or Apple smartphones in the past decade.

Perplexity, an AI-first search engine, is gaining traction in the market and challenging Google's dominance. A study by SEO platform BrightEdge found that Perplexity's referral traffic to brand websites has grown 40% monthly since January. The study also revealed that 60% of Perplexity's citations match the top 10 organic results on Google. However, despite Perplexity's growth, Google still remains the leader in search referral traffic. The study advises businesses to focus on optimizing for conversation rather than individual keywords and to ensure their sites have structured information for AI search engines.
