A nonprofit organization called TrueMedia.org, founded by Oren Etzioni, a professor at the University of Washington, has released free tools to detect digital disinformation. These tools are designed to identify fake and doctored images, audio, and video, aiming to provide a better defense against misleading AI-generated content. However, as AI technology continues to advance, the spread of disinformation, including deepfakes, remains a major concern. The tech industry is becoming increasingly aware of this threat and has taken steps to limit the potential harm. Detecting deepfakes is challenging, and experts believe that the technology used to create them will always surpass technology designed to detect them effectively. Cooperation between regulators, AI developers, and tech giants is necessary to combat disinformation effectively, but the chances of such collaboration happening before the fall elections are slim.
