A lone developer just open sourced a tool that could bring an end to Nvidia's AI hegemony — AMD financed it for months but abruptly ended its support. Nobody knows why

Andrzej Janik, the creator of ZLUDA, a tool that allows CUDA code to run on GPUs from AMD and Intel, has open sourced the project after both companies dropped their support. Originally developed as a means to enable Intel GPUs to run CUDA applications, Janik left Intel and was contracted by AMD to continue developing ZLUDA. However, AMD also discontinued its support for the project. ZLUDA, now based on AMD's ROCm solution and supporting only Radeon GPUs, is considered complete and will only receive updates for specific workloads. Despite lacking corporate backing, ZLUDA has shown promise in allowing CUDA software to run on AMD GPUs.
