23andMe says hackers stole the ancestry data of nearly 7 million customers

Nearly 7 million users of 23andMe had their data stolen, with some parts of it being sold on the dark web. Hackers accessed the data using compromised logins that were the same on other websites. The stolen data includes personal information of nearly 7 million users, although only a small percentage of user accounts were directly accessed. The hackers used a technique called credential stuffing, which involved using login credentials exposed in past data breaches. DNA Relatives profiles of around 5.5 million users and Family Tree profile information of 1.4 million customers were accessed. 23andMe is in the process of notifying affected customers and has implemented password resets and two-step verification measures.
